Scrap Shop

This page features a list of frequently asked questions and their answers. If you can't find an answer to your query here, please go to Contact Us to contact us directly and we'll gladly help you.

Q: What benefit does ScrapShop give to my organisation?

A: Rubbish and waste can account for over 4% of business turnover. It's important to remember that each pound saved on material costs goes straight to the bottom line. So anything that can be done to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill will not only reduce your costs, but will also help the environment. In these recessionary times, we understand how important cost savings are, yet we also know that environmental issues must remain a top priority.

Q: Is ScrapShop genuinely free to use?

A: Yes it is. We receive funding from a number of different advertising sources, enabling us to provide ScrapShop as a totally free service.

Q: How do I find out more about items listed on ScrapShop?

A: Once you've registered as a member on ScrapShop, you can view contact details for all items listed on the site by clicking on the description of the item. You can then make contact with the trader by phone or email. Registration is quick, easy and free. If you're not already registered, select REGISTER from the menu at the top of this page.

Q: Are materials listed on ScrapShop offered for free?

A: It is entirely up to the trading member to decide whether or not an item being offered is to be free. Those offering particularly valuable goods or a delivery service for example may choose to state a cost. Members are asked to note this in their listing. Traders must then agree on the exact charge through dialogue (we would recommend that this is done prior to shipment and that a secure payment method is used).

Q: What types materials can be listed on ScrapShop?

A: ScrapShop can be used for almost anything that a member wants to discard, though clearly it must be legal. ScrapShop bears no responsibility for the items being traded. We try to minimise the risks of inappropriate items beings displayed by including an authorisation step into the process at the point when an item is being added. The admin team at ScrapShop will email a member with confirmation of acceptance and only then will the item go live on the website.

Q: If my company trades a computer thorough ScrapShop, how do I know that any hidden data on it will be misused?

A: ScrapShop cannot bear any responsibility for how end users will use computer equipment. We do however recommend that you consider computer re-use schemes which keep computer equipment securely locked away until the hard drives are safely erased.

Q: Where is ScrapShop based?

A: ScrapShop is managed by Green Buying Limited, based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. For our full address details, please visit the Contact Us page.

Q: Is ScrapShop a new concept?

A: Online Materials Exchanges have existed for many years now. However, ScrapShop is arguably the first purely private-sector based exchange that is part of a broad range of sustainable business services.

Q: What if I want to obtain material but don't have anything to dispose of?

A: Don't worry if you don't have any material of your own to offer; you are still a valuable member! After you have registered with ScrapShop, you can add a 'material wanted' record, allowing businesses that have such material to get in touch with you.

Q: Do I have to collect the material and do I need a waste carrier's licence?

A: In most cases, you do have to collect the material. If you do not have the capacity to pick up the goods, an arrangement can sometimes be made with the other trading member, as they are usually as eager to offload their material as you are to collect it! Equally we can source a waste distribution company that can help - just contact us on 0845 2178995 or email info@scrapshop.co.uk and we'll help you. Remember that you may need a Waste Carrier's Licence should the materials being shipped not be used for their original function - but for clarity please contact the Environment Agency.

Q: How do I delete items once they've been traded?

A:You can delete items wanted or available via the Members Dashboard (subheading "View / Amend Exchange Listings"). If after 6 months the item has not been deleted, the member will be emailed one week prior to the 6 months expiry date, reminding them that the item is due for deletion. The member can then choose to extend the advert for a further 6 months or delete it. If no action is taken, the item will automatically be removed and deleted exactly 6 months after original date of posting.

Q: How do I cancel my membership (and have my records removed)?

A:You can cancel your membership at any time. Just email info@scrapshop.co.uk requesting termination of membership. You will need to provide your Username. We will then remove all contact details immediately as well as any exchange listings which are on the site which have not been removed by the member.
